Go Fly A Kite. . .Literally!
I don’t know about you, but I loved flying kites with my family when I was younger. It was great!
One year, my sister even got a giant kite for her birthday (like this thing was bigger then we were at the time). We took it out into our backyard on a windy day and it took all three of us to hold on to it. Not going to lie, we also had fun letting it pull us across the backyard sometimes too.
April 19th has become recognized as “go fly a kite” day. While the origins of this phrase are intended to get people to leave you alone, the meaning has transformed recently into the idea that people are meant to take this phrase literally. Meaning, get outside, enjoy the beautiful spring air and actually fly a kite.
I have found that with April comes those beautiful spring breezes that are absolutely perfect for flying kites. So as I sat down to begin to write today’s blog, I began to reflect on these memories and thought I would challenge you to build and fly your own kite.
Your Challenge:
Design and build a kite that will rise and stay up in the air the longest amount of time.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Different weight and sizes of paper
- Tissue paper
- Plastic bags
- Popsicle sticks
- String
- Tape
- Glue
Once you’re done, or even during your construction, it is important to stop and reflect on what you have worked on. Here are some questions to help guide your thinking:
- The things that went well were …
- Some problems I encountered were …
- How I overcame the problem was that I …
- How would you improve your kite the next time that you build one?
- My favourite part of this challenge was …
