So in my class we have been talking about families and the fact that there are so many different types of families but that they all have one thing in common – they are all built on love. Growing up I never truly realized just how many different types of families there are. Did you know that there are 10 main ones?
– Two-parent families (also known as the nuclear family)
– Single parent family
– Grandparent-led family
– Extended family (where your extended family lives with you)
– Blended family
– Foster family
– Adopted family
– Immigrant family
– Same-sex family
– Childless family
We live in a very diverse world, a world that continues to grow and change and a world that is full of love. While each family is unique and special, they all hold one thing in common – love.
Families often do things together – play games, go camping in the summer, go on walks, watch movies etc. The people you include and the activities that you do together all mix together to create one amazing family and the recipe is one that can’t be repeated. In our classroom, we even drew each member of our family and placed them together in a mixing bowl.
But one thing that I love about families is that everyone has their own unique family recipes that get passed down from generation to generation or that you happen to find and everyone absolutely loves. In my family growing up it was a Dutch dish called “bourenkoel” (forgive me if I’m spelling that wrong because I’m spelling phonetically) and Oma’s meatball soup. There could be nothing that came above these two dishes, and when we all got together I could pretty much guarantee you that one of these dishes would always be served and very well received. Now that I’m married, my husband and I absolutely love “Ham and Broccoli Ring”. What’s your family’s secret or go-to dish? Why not create it all together this weekend!
Ham and Broccoli Ring
¾ lb. cooked ham, chopped
1 c. steamed broccoli florets, finely chopped
1 c. shredded cheese
½ c. mayonnaise
1 tbsp honey mustard
2 cans Pillsbury Crescent Rolls
1 egg white, beaten
Spray a cookie sheet with non-stick spray. In a large bowl combine the ham, broccoli, cheese, mayonnaise and mustard. Mix everything together really well.
Unroll 1 can of dough and form into a circle with the triangle bases slightly overlapping as you go. Open the second can of dough and press the bases of the triangles against the ones already on the cookie sheet. Spoon in your filling mixture around the circle and carefully wrap the ends of the triangles around, like you’re gently tucking it into bed. Brush the ring with the egg white and bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for about 30-35 minutes.
